Chapter 25

Astrid followed Albon to the second floor where her uncle had his study. As she went up the wide staircase and faced the corridor, she had the odd feeling that the place was smaller than she remembered. She had always thought the great keep was immense, a city in itself. Now it did not seem that big. It was curious how, to a child’s mind, her world had seemed massive and full of so much to discover; but now that she was a grown woman and had experienced other places and worlds, her big home did not seem so large.

They went by the great library, which still seemed immense. It was so large it had two doors, one at each end. They were open, and Astrid took a quick glance inside. There were hundreds and hundreds of books, placed on large shelves that ran along the walls from floor to ceiling. In the middle of the room was a large round table for studying. Several chairs and some small tables were placed in the corners of the library. She thought of Egil. He would find the place fantastic. Her friend would surely stay there for days if allowed.

Astrid admired books for the vast knowledge they housed that a person could obtain from. But she did not find them as fascinating as her friend Egil. She was more prone to action than study, even if she had been brought up reading a lot, something uncommon in Norghanian society, especially for a girl. She had her uncle to thank for her exposure to books. He had made sure she was well educated, and the fact that she was a girl had not been an issue at all, as it should be. She was taught and trained with weapons and books. She was grateful for this, because unfortunately, this was not the rule for all girls and women in Norghana. That needed to change. Women ought to have the same opportunities, treatment, and rights as men, and one day it would be so. Women like Ingrid, Nilsa, and herself would work to achieve that future and, like them, there were many others changing the kingdom’s future at that same moment. The Rangers made no differentiation between genders either. For them the fact that you were a woman had no positive or negative implications. Astrid had liked that from the first day she joined the corps.

They continued down the corridor until they reached her uncle’s study. There was a man guarding the wrought-oak door. He was dressed like the others in that odd attire and carried the same weapons. Astrid was surprised there were guards posted outside the door of her uncle’s study inside the keep. No one would be able to sneak in there, least of all with so many guards. Why did her uncle feel the need to keep guards posted outside his door? She thought it was curious. She did not remember her uncle having guards at the door of his office while she was growing up; she remembered dropping in to see him without any trouble.
